A prolonged occlusion of the artery leads to the occurrence of a myocardial infarction \/ heart attack.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"ccib-wysiwyg-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ccibelledonne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ccib_education_12.png\" alt=\"Coronary stenosis\" \/><figcaption><strong>Coronary stenosis<\/strong> \u2014 Image of a normal coronary artery, by comparison to a pathologic coronary artery with an atheroma narrowing limiting normal blood flow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"ccib-h2\">What is angina pectoris?<\/h2>\n<p>A sensation of pain, tightness or heaviness in the chest which may radiate to the jaw, shoulders, back or arms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Duration<\/strong>: between 2 to 10 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Precipitating factors:<\/strong> symptoms usually occur during exertion, emotional stress, in the cold or after a meal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relieving factors:<\/strong> symptoms disappear on their own with rest after 5 minutes or after taking trinitrine spray.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other symptoms may suggest problems with the coronary arteries: shortness of breath, marked tiredness or weakness \/ dizziness.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"ccib-wysiwyg-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ccibelledonne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ccib_education_13.png\" alt=\"Gravity factors\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"ccib-wysiwyg-image\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"ccib-h2\">Myocardial Infarction<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What happens when a coronary artery is completely blocked?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Myocardial infarction is characterized by the rupture of an atherosclerotic coronary plaque, which causes an abrupt interruption of blood flow to a specific area of the heart muscle.\u00a0 \u00a0When a plaque rupture occurs within a coronary artery, blood components such as platelets and red blood cells will clump together to form a blood clot within the coronary artery, thus blocking normal blood circulation to the heart muscle. \u00a0The lack of blood and oxygen supply to the heart generate symptoms such as <em>angina pectoris<\/em> (Figure B).
